New Jersey Devils Learn to Play with Princeton Youth Hockey
Learn to Play is a program that provides a unique opportunity for families to join the hockey community and for participants to develop fundamental skills to help them succeed both on and off the ice. Created jointly by the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL). Learn to Play’s goal is to inspire youth and welcome more families into the hockey community.
Tiger Cubs Hockey
LPNHA offers Tiger Cubs, a beginner level program for our youngest players to improve their skating and stick skills while also participating in small-sided games. The goal of the Tiger Cubs program is to introduce hockey in a fun, high-energy environment and provide the kids with the base skill set necessary to join our Nassau House Hockey or U8 travel teams upon completion.
For for the 2024-25 season, Tiger Cubs is open to players with a 2017 birth year or younger that have at least minimal skating skills. LPNHA adheres to USA Hockey’s American Development Model which mandates that all players under the age of 8 play on smaller game surfaces so that they can develop better decision making skills with the puck.
Smaller teams and more practice sessions allow players more time with the puck alongside skaters of a similar caliber. This approach is meant to foster better skills and more fun for the player, and less burnout for the player and their family.

Nassau House Hockey
LPNHA is excited to offer Nassau House Hockey, established in 1987, a recreational level weekend program for our players to improve their skating and stick skills alongside participation in game play. The goal of Nassau House Hockey is to provide participants with a fun and developmental hockey experience where they can progress toward future participation with Nassau House Hockey or with our U10-U12 travel teams.
For the 2024-25 season, Nassau House Hockey is open to players with 2012-2016 birth years that have at least minimal skating skills. The typical week will include structured, high-energy practice time on Saturday and small area or full-ice game play on Sunday.
Please contact Hockey Director, Ian McNally with any questions.
Required Equipment for Tiger Cubs & Nassau House Hockey:
All players need to be in full hockey equipment. We will provide each with a hockey jersey.
- Helmet & full-face shield - The helmet must be approved by the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and must be accompanied by a full-face shield with chin protection.
- Shoulder pads - The cap of the shoulder pad should cover the shoulder. Straps under the arms should attach securely. The front flap should come down far enough to cover the collarbone.
- Elbow pads - Straps should remain tight, providing a snug fit over the elbow. Elbow pads should extend down the forearm to the top of the glove.
- Shin pads - Shin pads should cover the leg from the top of the skates to above the knees, overlapping a few inches above the bottom of the hockey pants. The knee is a primary area of concern for protection. The pad should cover the knee when the leg is straight and when it is bent at the knee. Pads should bend just below the knee in order to conform to the bent leg.
- Supporter and cup - This is essential protective equipment for boys and girls; check for proper fit.
- Gloves - Gloves should have ample room for the fingers and thumb and must not be too snug in the wrist area. The cuff of the glove should come up far enough to adequately cover the wrist area, extending up to the bottom of the elbow pads.
- Hockey Pants - The top padded portion of the pants should cover the hips, lower ribs and kidneys. The bottom of the pants legs should be an inch or two above the knees, overlapping with the top of the shin pads. The area above the knee is often hit by the puck, so make sure there is no gap between the pants and the knee pad.
- Jersey and socks - Jerseys should be large enough so that movement is not restricted. Socks should be held up on the thigh by a garter belt or velcro strap.
- Skates – Hockey skates are typically 1 size smaller then a shoe size and should be tied tightly to provide support for a beginner skater.
- Stick – Sticks can be purchased in Junior sizes or cut to roughly the child’s nose/mouth area when in shoes.
